GTA 6 Drives Demand Surge; Report Says Sony PS5 Pro Shortage May Persist Until 2027
IT Home, October 13 news: GTA 6 is the most anticipated game of 2026, and this title has already been considered one of the causes of the game console shortage, with the PlayStation 5 Pro shortage being especially pronounced. Sony's official website is currently out of stock, and this high-end Sony console is now selling for $1,100 (IT Home note: approximately 7,370 RMB at current exchange rates) and above on auction sites.
Part of the reason for the surge in console demand is that when GTA 6 launches on November 19, it will only be available on PlayStation 5/Pro and Xbox Series X/S platforms, and no versions for other platforms have been officially announced yet.
According to CNET, Sony notified retailers in September that, affected by "short-term market supply tightness and high demand," the PlayStation 5 Pro supply shortage will continue until 2027. The most serious bottleneck constraining PlayStation console supply is the global memory and storage component crisis triggered by squeezed AI infrastructure demand, also known as "RAMageddon."
The PS5 Pro can deliver higher frame rates and stronger 4K graphics processing for a number of games, and this new title from Rockstar can also run on the standard PS5.
However, GTA 6 is not the only major new release on the PlayStation platform recently: Wolverine, a PS5-exclusive game created by the development team behind Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Spider-Man 2, has reportedly sold 2.16 million copies since its launch in September.
The PlayStation 5 Pro debuted in November 2024 at a price of $700 (approximately 4,690 RMB at current exchange rates), but its market retail price has now risen to $900 (approximately 6,030 RMB at current exchange rates).
GTA 6 is the highly anticipated sequel to GTA 5, released in 2013. The playable map of this crime-themed game is reportedly twice the size of its predecessor's, and the game's pre-order price is set at $80 (approximately 536 RMB at current exchange rates).
