Ex-Naughty Dog VFX Artist on GTA6: Its Massive Scale Intimidates Him, Prefers Shorter Games

Former Naughty Dog visual effects artist Matt Radford said regarding game length that thinking about massive-scale works like GTA 6 or the next Elder Scrolls feels somewhat daunting to him. He personally looks forward more to shorter, more focused games.

Radford worked on The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, and now runs the studio 5th Corner. In an interview with Kiwi Talkz, he explained that players have limited time to spend playing games. Works requiring an investment of more than 50 hours are hard for some people to finish; shorter games can be completed in a weekend or two.

Speaking of his own play preferences, he felt The Last of Us 2 was too long, and he also misses the roughly 6 to 8 hour length of early Uncharted titles. He also believes that if studios focused on more compact works, they might have a chance to reduce the production costs of modern large-scale games.

However, Radford did not dismiss GTA 6 because of this. He said he believes the game will be excellent and hopes it succeeds, because in his view, the game failing would not be a good sign for the industry.
