Rockstar Reveals GTA 6 Wanted System Changes: Police Must Identify You First, Stars Light Up Before the Chase Begins

According to a report by GamePro, Rob Nelson, development director at Rockstar North and co-head of the studio, revealed in a recent IGN interview several changes to the wanted system in GTA6. Compared to previous titles, the new game places greater emphasis on the premise of "whether the police recognize you," and adds more visual cues.

Nelson explained that in GTA6, as long as the police are still unclear about what you look like, the wanted stars will only be displayed as "hollow outlines"; only after law enforcement successfully identifies you will the stars become solid. This design is consistent with the footage shown in the previous Netflix special—besides the classic white stars, red stars also appeared, along with additional symbols beneath them.

These additional symbols are used to indicate what information the police currently have, such as the vehicle you are driving, the clothes you are wearing, and whether you are acting together with accomplices. The red stars themselves still represent the wanted level, showing how strong a pursuit the police are deploying against you. At present, officials have not provided a complete explanation of the meaning of all the symbols.

The new wanted mechanism kicks in before the police even appear. According to Nelson, a crime must first be reported—for example, when robbing a store, someone must call the police or trigger the corresponding alarm before the police become aware of it. If the player quickly succeeds and leaves before the police arrive, they may avoid a chase entirely.

This also makes the newly added cues more meaningful: even if the police learn that a crime has occurred, it does not mean they know who committed it. In GTA6, avoiding being recognized and making a quick getaway will become an important strategy for evading a wanted level.
