GTA 6 Marketing “In Serious Jeopardy” As Delay Looms For Miami Campaign
Rockstar Games’ plans for a GTA 6 takeover of Miami have hit some roadblocks. New reports have detailed how some city officials are pushing back on Rockstar’s want to advertise their new game.
We’re just over a month away from the release of Grand Theft Auto VI and the global marketing campaign is truly kicking off. Murals have been painted, skyscapers are being covered, blimps are flying but Miami’s local political are locking horns.
In a new report by The Miamian, Rockstar’s vision to have county-owned properties such as Miami International Airport included within the game’s marketing campaign is “in serious jeopardy.” This stems from various county commissioners not wanting to advertise a game that covers “violence, corruption and unethical behavior” within Miami.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s staff are working with Rockstar to “temporarily” promote GTA VI at Miami International Airport, PortMiami, Metromover stations and other locations. However, County Commissioner Rene Garcia calls it “uncomfortable” and that the county “should “not be collaborating” with GTA VI. There was almost a vote that would have ceased all negotiations with Rockstar; it has been delayed. Where the Democrats see it as a great opportunity to boost the economy through payments from Rockstar and a surge in tourism, the Republican officials are concerned the game will cause more violence. Welcome back, 2004.
“Done some research, and at least a minimum of $150 million, [Rockstar is] spending on marketing. And Miami Dade County negotiated a contract for $957,000? It does not make sense.”
County Commissioner Rene Garcia
Author of the article, Francisco Alvarado, calls it “manufactured outrage”. He goes onto say that those fighting back against the promo material are “more bothered about being frozen out of the discussions with Rockstar” and “deprived” of the chance to get more money from Rockstar for their political committees.
Another reporter, Joel Franco, explained on Twitter that the agreement for Miami Beach marketing to start on October 15th is yet to be signed. Given we’re just a couple days away, it is looking like that will be delayed. An official told Franco that that date will “most likely not” be the actual start date. This is due to details still being worked out between all parties.
