Major Innovation! GTA 6 Details Revealed: Every Replay Offers Something New
According to related reports, GTA 6 will greatly increase freedom at the mission level. Rockstar's development team intends to expand the range of choices within missions, allowing players to accomplish objectives through different routes and multiple means, while ensuring overall gameplay quality.
Rob Nelson, head of the Rockstar North joint studio, discussed the game's design philosophy in an IGN interview, saying the team has always been looking for a balance between freedom and narrative. He admitted that, to ensure the story progresses reasonably and smoothly, some key moments will still retain guidance, and the narrative takes priority in specific scenes.
However, this game has undergone extensive optimization of mission mechanics, opening up gameplay as much as possible without breaking the experience. Nelson cited the gameplay footage released earlier by Netflix as an example: the high-rise building evacuation mission offers multiple escape routes; the vehicle chase mission is fairly linear in its early stages, with Jason shooting and Lucia driving, but in later phases players can still shake off the police pursuit and complete the mission even without following the recommended route.
Rockstar strives to keep in-mission mechanics consistent with the open world's underlying rules. Systems like wanted level and robbery will not have their logic modified separately within missions, seamlessly matching the experience of players freely exploring the state of Leonida, so there will be no fragmentation of rules.
Nelson also mentioned that, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA 6 considered multiple playthroughs from the project's inception. Greater mission freedom will give rise to all kinds of ways to complete the game. Players replaying the same mission can have a different gameplay experience each time, and after the official launch it is very likely that many completion strategies the developers never anticipated will emerge.
